The 2020 US Army IMCOM Europe One Act Play Festival

     The 2020 US Army IMCOM Europe and AACT Region X One Act Play Festival will be held Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 9-11 at KMC Onstage in Kaiserslautern, Germany.   The annual theatre festival, celebrating its 25th year, will include a new YouthFest, special events and theatre skills workshops - all FREE and open to the public. 
     The top One Act play selected by a panel of theatre professionals will be nominated to represent the US Army and Army Europe Entertainment at the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) 2021 AACTFest National Festival in the US in June.

     The Festival will also include the first annual US Army IMCOM Europe Entertainment Youth Fest  featuring shows selected, directed, produced and performed by community youth. The top Youth production will be nominated to represent the US Army and US Army Entertainment at the 2021 International Youth Fest held in conjunction with the AACTFest in June.
 
      The weekend also includes workshops for adults and youth in acting, directing, singing, costume design, sound design and improvisation.
 
      All events are free and open to the public.
 
     Please be aware, COVID prevention measures including the wearing of masks and physical distancing must be followed. Seats and workshop spaces are limited. All instructions will be posted at KMC Onstage.
 
UPDATE: Due to production schedules and continuing Covid restrictions, the 2020 TOPPERs will not be presented at the One Act/Youth Fest as previously announced. The 2020 TOPPERs will be presented in a special video presentation at a later date. Please check the TOPPERs page for updates and more information.

    The US Army Entertainment Youth Festival follows the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) guidelines and procedures. 
2020 US Army Entertainment Youth Festival Goals
• To provide learning experiences in artistic, technical, and management areas through performances, adjudication, workshops, and festival participation; thereby affirming, supporting, and nurturing youth theatre participation and production. 
• To stimulate and inspire youth to strive toward excellence in theatrical production and to recognize them for their achievement through an appropriate adjudication process.
• To develop enlightened and discerning audiences for youth and community theatre through participation, observation, and constructive adjudication.  
 
Festival Adjudicators and Workshop Leaders
Paul Bourne.pngPaul Bourne is the Artistic Director of the Menagerie Theatre Company, Cambridge, England. He is also the artistic director of the international Hotbed Festival of New Writing and a former Artistic Director of Center Stage, New York. Paul is a Fellow at The University of Cambridge and a faculty member at Skolkovo University in Moscow. His international directing career has spanned across Europe and he has directed over seventy professional productions in ten different countries. His work has ranged from productions on the Fringe to major international productions in St. Petersburg and London's West End. Highlights include the world premiere of Tennessee Williams’ Guignol in New York and the world touring production of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged (out of Washington DC). Paul was a Judge at the very first US Army One Act Play Festival in 1995. He has been involved in Army Entertainment for many years running master classes, directing and supporting programs in Europe and The US. Paul is the creator of the US Army/IMCOM Europe Entertainment performance workshop, “It’s No Joke! Act Against Bullying.” This workshop addresses the issues of bullying among youth and is being presented by Entertainment Branches in cooperation with US Army CYSS at all US Army Garrisons in Germany and Italy.
 
Andrea Huber Pic.JPGAndrea Huber is an internationally renowned performer and director. A graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, she is also an Irene Ryan National Acting Award Winner. As an opera singer and musical theatre performer, she has performed at the Krefeld-Moenchengladbach Opera House, the Graz Opera House, the Prague State Opera and many other major opera venues in Europe. She has also performed as an actress and singer in South Africa, Norway, Greece and the US. She performed in Kiss of the Spiderwoman in Baden bei Wien in Austria, presented her one-woman Kurt Weill show in Graz, Austria in March 2020. Andrea directed a highly successful production of The Marriage of Figaro for the Boston Opera Collaborative in Feb. 2020. She also directed Oliver! and Sweeney Todd at the former Roadside Theater in Heidelberg, where she also performed her one-woman cabaret shows to rave reviews. Andrea was an adjudicator and workshop leader for the 2015 and 2019 US Army One Page Play Festival and the 2020 TOPPERs.
 
Vic Headshot.JPGVic Phillipson has worked for Army Entertainment for 29 years.  He was an Entertainment Director in Giessen from 1992 until 1995, and then in Heidelberg from 1995 until 2000.  Since moving to Norway in 2000, he has worked as a technical consultant for the program. He has served as the Technical Director and Stage Manager for the annual IMCOM Europe One Act/One Page Play Festivals and the Tournament of Plays (TOPPERs) Awards Show and Ceremony for over 22 years. When not consulting for Army Entertainment, Vic produces plays and musicals in Norway and works as a Port Agent for European Cruise Service at points of call for cruise ships all along the southern coast of Norway.

 

Michelle Yamazaki.jpgMichelle Yamazaki has her BFA in Theatre Arts and is an actor, director and certified drama teacher. Michelle has acted in repertory, summer stock and regional theatre in the western United States. Before moving to Japan in 2008, Michelle taught drama in the US where she established award-winning high school theatre programs and implemented summer camps for teens. While in Japan Michelle was an actor, director and board member for Tokyo International Players where she co-founded their highly successful youth program, TIP Youth, teaching, directing and producing youth-centered main stage productions and classes. Since moving to Germany, Michelle has been involved in KMC Onstage as a director and performer and was part of the team for re-establishing the teen summer theatre camp in 2018. Her directing credits for KMC Onstage include Much Ado About Nothing, Sweeney Todd and Little Shop of Horrors and she is looking forward to directing Hello, Dolly! later this season.
